On the weekend of June 4th to 6 2010, the Ancaster Blizzard Squirt Rep team competed in a tournament hosted by the Brantford Bobcats.

By way of background, this year marks the first time in recent memory, if not ever, Ancaster has had a Rep team participating in this age category. The existence of this team is a testament to the dedication of the organizers and coaches who commit their time to creating an opportunity for these girls and for this organization to excel in the future. Deserving thanks go out to Mark McClure, Andy Childs, Pat Daly, and Andy Vanderby.

Friday night's game saw the Blizzard up against a very hot team from Brantford. Brantford was 16 and 2 going into that game. Their hot streak continued as Brantford emerged victorious by a score of 15 to 1.

Our girls did not let that defeat get them down and came back strong in Saturday's three games. They won all three games and looked very solid both offensively and defensively. These wins over Pickering, Halton Hills, and Cambridge resulted from solid hitting, aggressive base running, and smart defensive play. As a result of this strong performance, Ancaster ended the round-robin portion of the tournament in second place out of the five participating teams.

Our girls advanced to the playoff round against third-place Pickering. Despite their ongoing enthusiasm, they did not advance to the final game.

On a personal note, I was given the honor and the privilege of participating in the weekend's events as a substitute coach. I was able to observe firsthand the girls enthusiasm, teamwork, grit and focus. It was a pleasure to be part of the experience as these girls build confidence which is sure to help them be successful during the rest of the season and in other tournaments. Each girl on this team should be proud of the way they were able to contribute to the team's success.

Contributing on the mound were pitchers Monica Daly, Paige McClure, Delaney Pierce, and Katie Vanderby. Contributing on defense were Shelby Hayward, Riley McClure, Rachel Aumais, Nicole Brownell, Megan Childs, Celina Clark, Kennedy Agnew-Gerl, and Sonya Carnegie.

The tournament was won by the host-team from Brantford.

It's hard to win a pennant, but it's harder losing one.
